A radar beam then transmitted at a reasonable angle (larger than 10 degrees) off the aircraft's axis will intersect this series of parabolas at various points. A synthetic aperture radar exploits this property, as it knows which Doppler shifts correspond to the axis of the beam it can manipulate the radar return data to narrow the beamwidth. The process is very intensive mathematically, to that degree that it is not currently practicable to attempt it in real time. Ace Combat: Joint Assault "This F-15 adds ground attack capabilities to its full-scale aerial combat abilities." Hangar How to Unlock This FLIR sensor generates an infrared image of the terrain in front of the aircraft and projects it onto the pilot’s HUD. This way the pilot is able to see the terrain in front of him through the HUD in shades of green even in total darkness or in adverse weather conditions. Seeing the terrain the pilot can easily fly at high speeds very close to the ground, thus using terrain features (mountains, valleys) to avoid enemy detection. The WSO can view the same image on one of his multi-purpose display, by calling up the HUD-repeater page. Note that the repeated FLIR image is available for the WSO regardless of whether the pilot had actually chosen to put the FLIR image on the HUD or not. Source f-15e.info

NicknamesUpgrading this aircraft to these levels unlocked the respective nicknames for use at any time. Aircraft equipped with the APG-82(V)1 AESA radar can simultaneously detect, identify and track multiple air and surface targets at longer ranges than ever before. The longer standoff range facilitates persistent target observation and information sharing for informed decision making. This superior battlespace awareness supports greater tactical mission capability. The result: greatly increased aircraft-aircrew effectiveness and survivability.

Its unparalleled range, persistence and weapons load make it the backbone of the U.S. Air Force, with the capability to perform air-to-air or air-to-surface missions at all altitudes, day or night, in any weather. The laser guided bomb and improved ECM allowed a return to medium attitude strikes to avoid the AAA while retaining the pinpoint accuracy, however the clear-weather-only constraint became very apparent. The RMP replaces the F-15E’s more than 20-year-old legacy APG-70 mechanically scanned radar with an active electronically-scanned array, or AESA, system designated as the APG-82(V)1.

Boeing GBU-39 GPS-guided 113kg (250lb) small diameter bomb The Laser Small Diameter Bomb (Laser SDB) system is the next generation of affordable and low-collateral-damage precision strike weapons, which builds on the success of the same Semi-active Laser (SAL) sensor currently used by Boeing’s Laser JDAM.  A Laser SDB increases mission effectiveness in several ways:Graphics: DirectX®11 compliant video card1 GB video RAM or higherNote: Due to limitations inherent in Prepar3D's PDK texture system, dual videocard setups such as SLI or Crossfire are not supported when running this sim in P3D v4 and above. The weapon can fly more than 45 miles to strike mobile targets, reducing the amount of time that aircrews’ spend in harm’s way. Its small size enables the use of fewer aircraft to take out the same number of targets as previous, larger weapons that required multiple jets. The SDB II bomb’s size has broader implications for the warfighter and taxpayers, as it means fewer attacks with less time spent flying dangerous missions.

The F-15's superior maneuverability and acceleration are achieved through its high engine thrust-to-weight ratio and low-wing loading. It was the first U.S. operational aircraft whose engines' thrust exceeded the plane's loaded weight, permitting it to accelerate even while in vertical climb. Low-wing loading (the ratio of aircraft weight to its wing area) is a vital factor in maneuverability and, combined with the high thrust-to-weight ratio, enables the aircraft to turn tightly without losing airspeed. The goal is to provide the engines an airflow as smooth and optimal as it can be. The variable ramps provide air at optimum subsonic flow to the face of the engine fan inlet within a wide range of aircraft speeds. The bypass door is used to relieve excess pressure in the inlet duct by driving excess air to the airflow outside of the aircraft if necessary.

MDC took a giant step in the late seventies, with the design of the F-18A's electronic cockpit built around a set of computer driven Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) displays. This radical departure from tradition earned the eighteen the name Tron Machine, but was highly successful. The experience gained was translated into the F-15E, which is an improvement on both the F-18 and earlier F-15s. Like the F-15 Silent Eagle concept and its various sub-options that have yet to find any buyers, this new Eagle offering may not be exclusive to new-build aircraft alone and could be able to be applied to various Eagle variants to varying degrees, depending on the operator’s needs. Conformal fuel tanks can even be fitted to existing F-15C/Ds, so this type of modification may not be limited to the F-15 Strike Eagle series alone.

F-15E Strike Eagle ️ US Multirole Strike FIGHTER [Review] - YouTub

  1. Last week Boeing was awarded two aircraft upgrading and modernization contracts, upgrading the operational capabilities of U.S. Air Force combat command F-15E Strike Eagles and B-1B Lancers
  2. The Boeing F-15E dual-role fighter is an advanced long-range interdiction fighter and tactical aircraft. The F-15E is the latest version of the Eagle, a Mach 2.5-class twin-engine fighter. More than 1,500 F-15s are in service worldwide with the US Air Force, US Air National Guard and the air forces of Israel, Japan and Saudi Arabia, including over 220 F-15E fighters.
  3. In terms of performance, the F-15E will differ little from its air superiority cousins. Thrust to weight on dry thrust will be in the 0.8 class, subject to fuel state, on reheat this will climb into the 1.2 class. Combat wing loading with air-to-air weapon load will approach 75 lb/sq ft. Though the aircraft is heavier than the baseline F-15C/D, it will be stressed for full 9G loaded which should maintain a decent turn capability. Even when loaded up with 8000 lb of ordnance, the F-15E program demonstrator aircraft apparently lost little energy in repeated 5G turns at 500 kts, with no significant reduction in roll rate due to ordnance load.

The F-15E Strike Eagle is an all-weather, multi-role, twin seat strike fighter derived from the F-15 Eagle air superiority tactical fighter. Of the two contenders, MDC was better placed with its flying F-15B two-seat Strike Eagle demonstrator, GD had the rather immature though otherwise exquisite cranked-arrow-wing F-16E. MDC's F-15B was fitted with a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and missionised rear cockpit (see Profile, Sept. 1984), it carried Conformal Fuel Tanks (CFTs) but retained the conventional pylon/hardpoint bomb carriage of the standard F-15B. This represents a quantum leap in combat capability and the density of these defences will present a problem if not dealt with intelligently. The USAFE anticipated this development and as early as 1979 began formulating the idea of an all-weather deep strike fighter to perform anti-armour and counter-air strikes. The LANTIRN pod set was initially aimed at the A-10 and F-16, both single seat aircraft with very limited all weather ability, however it was subsequently decided that a new all weather strike capable air superiority fighter was needed. A contest was initiated between McDonnell Douglas and General Dynamics, the prize a contract for the Dual Role Fighter (DRF). A tactical flight management system for air-air and air-ground missions is under development. The APG-70 is essentially a development of the late APG-63 radar as employed in the Strike Eagle demonstrator. The radar has all the basic air-to-air modes used in the MSIP II APG-63 PSP radar, which include three search modes, raid assessment, track-while scan, non-co-operative target recognition, the Supersearch, boresight, vertical and gun acquisition dogfight modes. The radar will illuminate for the AIM-7M, cue the AIM-9M and target the AIM-120A Amraam in single or multishot modes, aside from ranging for the M-61A1 cannon and supporting earlier versions of the Sparrow and Sidewinder. Where the radar is extraordinary is in its ability to provide near real time synthetic aperture imagery.

In fact the power of the 229 engine is such that an F-15E flying in a clean configuration (i.e. no external ordnance and pods) and without CFT’s can even reach supersonic speed without using afterburner. This is called ‘supercruise’ ability, a term that was introduced with reference to the ultramodern F-22 Raptor!

  1. Many of these new features were planned as part of the stealthy F-15SE Silent Eagle, which failed to attract direct interest from new customers. Indeed, Silent Eagle enhancements may never be fully realized as Boeing was largely relying on customer support to bring these to reality and the loss in South Korea effectively put paid to the key stealthy improvements. The conformal weapons bays (CWBs) were, for example, part of the industrial offset with Korean industry. The CWBs had two doors and two weapon mounts, the upper, side-opening door carrying a rail launcher for an AIM-120 AMRAAM or an AIM-9-type missile, or a launcher for a single 500lb or 1,000lb bomb or two Small Diameter Bombs (SDBs). The lower door accommodated a trapeze-plus-ejector mount for an AIM-120, or for a single 500lb or 1,000lb bomb or two SDBs. The CWBs would also accommodate a small amount of fuel. Having funded an initial test period, including firing an AIM-120 from the CWB in July 2010, Boeing was ready to develop a number of the Silent Eagle options with customer support as prospective buyers came forward.

The pod contains a laser designator/rangefinder to aid the delivery of precision guided munitions (PGM’s) plus the software necessary to automatically track the selected target regardless of the maneuvering of its host plane. The designator is a four-digit PRF coded laser which can designate for the aircraft’s own weapons and for the weapons of other aircraft as well (this latter technique is called ‘buddy-lasing’). In case of unguided (‘dumb’) bombs the laser is used to determine target range and the pod feeds this input to the aircraft’s fire control system.JHMCS was first in the market, first in combat. And now, the JHMCS II product line is the worlds first high definition HMD using smart-visor technology that operates in both day and night mode. The seeker works in three modes to provide maximum operational flexibility: millimeter wave radar to detect and track targets through weather, imaging infrared for enhanced target discrimination and semi-active laser that enables the weapon to track an airborne laser designator or one on the ground. Externally the aircraft thus appears as a two-seat F-15D with added hardpoints, but the differences in internal systems are quite radical. The flight control system for instance employs a triple redundant fully digital Control Augmentation System (CAS) which replaces the existing analogue unit. The aft fuselage is configured to accept both the F110-GE-100 or F100-PW-220 afterburning turbofans and both have digital engine control units. The aircraft has a new radar, redesigned fore and aft cockpits, added avionic hardware and the interface to support the LANTIRN pods. The radar and the pods are powerful sensors; their particular features reflect in the cockpit design.

F-15 Eagle Specification

  1. Operational deployment of the Sniper pod on the F-15E began in January 2005, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
  2. It is interesting to note that the aircraft is also cleared to carry three GPU-5A gun pods for close support missions. It is not clear whether the AGM-88 HARM will be adopted; as an anti-radar missile capable of launch from terrain-following aircraft it would be well matched to the mission. The F-15E has inflight refuelling provisions standard for all F-15s, it carries 13,500 lb of fuel internally, 9,750 lb in the conformal fuel tanks and may carry three 610 gallon external tanks.
  3. These are obviously excellent reasons far adopting such a philosophy, however one must be very realistic about the nature of enemy defences for this approach to be cost effective: The fighter aircraft must have the performance to subdue enemy air defence fighters and the aircrew must have the skills to engage in air combat (note past instances of P-38s being downed by Hungarian Me-410s or F-4s being hit by NVAF MiG-21s). The aircraft cannot be employed in an environment where they will fail victim to AAA and small arms.

  1. This may not be followed in practice, as the software programmable displays are extremely flexible and the WSO could be expected to systematically call up various displays on each screen. The WSO has a set of flight controls and throttles, basic flight instruments and a repeater UFC panel. He also has a left and right hand controller for the CRT displays, typically used for cursor or FLIR aimpoint control.
  2. Lockheed Martin created an improved version of the pod in 1995 mainly for the Navy’s F-14 Tomcats. This pod integrated the navigation and targeting features in one unit, plus brought many improvements over the previous two-pod LANTIRN system.
  3. Each of the low-drag conformal fuel tanks that hug the F-15E's fuselage can carry 750 gallons of fuel. The tanks hold weapons on short pylons rather than conventional weapon racks, reducing drag and further extending the range of the Strike Eagle.
  4. This powerful, integrated seeker seamlessly shares targeting information among all three modes, enabling the weapon to engage fixed or moving targets at any time of day and in all-weather conditions. The SDB II bomb’s tri-mode seeker can also peer through battlefield dust and debris, giving the warfighter a capability that’s unaffected by conditions on the ground or in the air.

The Strike Eagle has been deployed in Operation Desert Storm, Operation Allied Force and Operation Odyssey Dawn carrying out deep strikes against high-value targets, combat patrols and providing close air support for coalition troops. It has also seen action in later conflicts and has been exported to several countries. One of the most important additions to the F-15E is the rear cockpit, and the weapons systems officer. On four screens, this officer can display information from the radar, electronic warfare or infrared sensors, monitor aircraft or weapons status and possible threats, select targets, and use an electronic "moving map" to navigate. Two hand controls are used to select new displays and to refine targeting information. Displays can be moved from one screen to another, chosen from a "menu" of display options. Quoted improvements in range when using tangential carriage against ejector racks vary from 28% to 41%, in any case it is significant. The aircraft retains the centreline station and both inboard and outboard wing stations. If fully loaded with 500 lb Mk 82 bombs (or Mk 20 cluster munitions), the aircraft will carry 12 bombs tangentially, six on its centreline and eight between its inboard wing stations, a total of 26 or 13,000 lb. The AIM-120A is a non-reprogrammable missile (requires a hardware change to upgrade the missile software). The AIM-120B/C is reprogrammable through the missile umbilical using Common Field-level Memory Reprogramming Equipment (CFMRE). The AIM-120C has smaller aerosurfaces to enable internal carriage on the Air Force F-22 aircraft. The USAF All-Up-Round (AUR) container houses an internal cable which enables up to four missiles to be reprogrammed while in the container. USN containers are not equipped with the cable and must be opened to reprogram the missile. All three AMRAAM variants are currently approved for use on the F-15C/D/E, F-16C/D, and F/A-18C/D aircraft. Source fas.orgThe F15E is equipped with a triple-redundant BAE SYSTEMS Astronics flight control system. Using manual terrain following, navigation is possible over rough terrain at altitudes down to 200ft, at nearly 600mph, with the pilot following commands from the LANTIRN system. Automatic terrain following is accomplished through the flight control system linked to the LANTIRN navigation pod’s terrain-following radar. All F-15Es will be fitted with conformal fuel tanks, each of which is equipped with six tangential hardpoints, three outboard and three inboard. The outboard hardpoints are stressed for up to 1000 lb weapons, the inboard fore and aft for up to 2000 lb weapons. The low-altitude navigation and targeting infrared for night, or LANTIRN, system allows the aircraft to fly at low altitudes, at night and in any weather conditions, to attack ground targets with a variety of precision-guided and unguided weapons. The LANTIRN system gives the F-15E unequaled accuracy in weapons delivery day or night and in poor weather, and consists of two pods attached to the exterior of the aircraft.Fitted with twelve 500 lb Mk82 slicks, a centreline 600 USG drop tank, both LANTIRN pods and four AIM-9M Sidewinder AAMs, the F-15E DRF displays its drab lizard camouflage. The wraparound green/olive/grey may not be as attractive as TAC's traditional green/sand/olive as used by F-4s and F-111s, but has demonstrated substantially better blending against terrain and will be adopted by the USAF, according to MDC (Artwork Mark Kopp).

The F-15E HUD (Kaiser IR-2394/A) is much greater than the HUD in previous F-15 models (A, B, C, D), thus letting the system display more information. It provides a 21° x 28° field of view. Note that although the HUD glass is more or less rectangular, the limits of the maximal projected area are rounded (see photo above left), thus no image can be projected to the very edges of the HUD. Symbology projected to the HUD appear in green, its appearance can be controlled by the pilot, using the HUD controls under the UFC (Up-Front Controller). HUD symbology is projected as if ‘focused at infinity’, thus letting the pilot see the symbology sharply while actually looking at objects far in front of the aircraft. The DJHMCS is part of the new JHMCS II product line and it is touted as ‘an economical but significant upgrade’ that features ‘all new’ aspects of JHMCS II, but is aimed as a retrofit for existing JHMCS-capable platforms and crucially it incorporates a new night capability. The Navigation Pod is the F-15E pilot's primary penetration tool, it contains both FLIR and Terrain Following Radar (TFR). The FLIR system is fixed forward and covers the pilot's field of view through the Head-Up-Display (HUD), it is designed to superimpose (1:1) an infrared image of the outside world over a real image to assist in night or reduced visibility terrain recognition and avoidance. The pilot may thus absorb both the visible terrain image (or its residue) and its infrared features simultaneously. The terrain avoidance/following radar (see TE, Sept. 84) is an advanced fully digital type, not only difficult to jam but also stealthy by virtue of beam direction and power control, intermittently switching off when not immediately generating a terrain profile. The TFR apparently generates throttle commands to avoid the need for energy management by the pilot. Combined, these two systems should eliminate the traditional worries of the night flying, terrain hugging pilot. The pod is currently under evaluation and is expected to be available in time for the F-15E.

The bomb can strike targets more than 45 miles away and has a small size, so more of them can be carried by fewer aircraft. E15 is our answer to the need for more output in a compact size. Aerodynamic changes to the F-15SE will improve the aircraft’s aerodynamic efficiency and fighter performance by reducing overall airframe weight and drag. The RCS reduction methods are applied to the airframe for frontal aspect stealth capability thus improving mission effectiveness.

The HRM SAR mode in the APG-70 can perform with grazing angles down to 0.5 degrees, which translates into a 1000 feet altitude at 20 nm from the target. The aircraft must therefore pop up for several seconds (cca 3-7 sec) so the radar beam can 'dwell' on the mapped terrain to generate the image. Due to processor speed limits, further complicated by the timesharing operation of the radar which can simultaneously perform in other modes, the SAR mode will only generate patch maps of the immediate target area. The exercise is intensive; for instance the inertial navigator must furnish the radar with position updates six times faster while mapping. F-15 Strike Eagle programme and development. After obtaining a radar image off the target area, the F-15E aircrew can designate targets by positioning a cursor on the radar display. The target data is transferred to the LANTIRN system for use by the tracking FLIR, which enables aiming of air-to-ground weapons from up to ten miles. Target tracking data is handed automatically to precision-guided weapons such as low-level laser-guided bombs, which can be guided to the target after release.According to the Air Force’s first RMP report, the new radar system is designed to retain functionality of the old legacy radar system while providing expanded mission employment capabilities to include:

The Targeting Pod is the F-15E System Operator's primary target recognition tool, containing a narrow field of view FLIR camera and laser rangefinder/designator. The pod was designed as a compact and lightweight system, the departure from traditional design in some areas has apparently contributed to developmental difficulties. The FLIR is boresighted with a laser which maybe used to measure range for navigation or weapon delivery; alternately it may be pulsed with a code for guiding laser guided bombs. The pod is equipped with an automatic point/area tracker and the FLIR has multiple fields of view, as is customary in this class of system. The Targeting Pod weighs in at 540 lb, somewhat heavier than the 430 lb Navigation Pod. Both pods require interface electronics to tie in to the aircraft's avionic hardware. The central CRT is a five-inch unit as in the 18, but is fitted with a colour tube. All three displays employ the menu driven technique of the 18, as evidenced by the encircling rows of selector buttons. The basic APG-63 offered real beam groundmapping and Doppler beam sharpened ground-mapping modes, but these were limited in resolution to the order of 50 feet. The synthetic aperture High Resolution Mapping (HRM) mode in the APG-70 offers a lot more. Synthetic aperture techniques exploit the Doppler effect to sharpen the beam in azimuth, as it is easy to improve range resolution by pulse compression in the radar receiver. The Doppler effect results in a frequency of the radar return; this is proportional to the relative velocity of the aircraft and the object reflecting the radar return. In effect we may visualise the locus of all directions with a particular Doppler as a cone aligned with the longitudinal axis of the aircraft. For each Doppler a particular cone, objects nearly abeam with little whereas objects ahead with a large . To take it a step further, we may note that these cones will intersect the ground below (assuming straight and level flight) in the form of parabolas (imagine the horseshoe shapes). Structurally the F-15E differs little from its predecessors; in terms of component weight the commonality approaches 97%. Though the differences are few, they have significant effects. The structure has been strengthened in several areas which allows the aircraft full 9G manoeuvring capability when loaded. The undercarriage and associated load bearing structures have also been strengthened, lifting the allowed gross takeoff weight from 68,000 lb in the C/D to a full 81,000 lb. The AIM-7 Sparrow is a radar-guided, air-to-air missile with a high-explosive warhead. The versatile Sparrow has all-weather, all-altitude operational capability and can attack high-performance aircraft and missiles from any direction. The AIM/RIM-7 series is a semiactive, air-to-air, boost-glide missile, designed to be either rail or ejection launched. Semiactive, continuous wave, homing radar, and hydraulically-operated control surfaces direct and stabilize the missile on a proportional navigational course to the target. Propulsion for the missile is provided by a solid propellant rocket motor. In April 2001, Boeing received a contract for a further ten F-15E aircraft for the USAF, bringing the total to 227. The air force initially planned to purchase 392 F-15s. The first production model of the F-15E was delivered to the 405th Tactical Training Wing, Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, in April 1988. The ‘Strike Eagle’, as it was dubbed, received initial operational capability on 30 September 1989.The contract, announced Wednesday by the Department of Defense, is for design, development, integration, test and production engineering for changes to the SDB.

“The old radar system is hydraulic, has moving parts and requires three maintainers to perform repairs after every 30 flight hours,” said Master Sgt. Jennifer Schildgen, a 366th Fighter Wing avionics manager. “The new radar system is a beam scan, doesn’t have any moving parts and is projected to only require one maintainer to perform repairs after more than 2,000 flight hours.”The AMRAAM weighs 340 pounds and uses an advanced solid-fuel rocket motor to achieve a speed of Mach 4 and a range in excess of 30 miles. In long-range engagements AMRAAM heads for the target using inertial guidance and receives updated target information via data link from the launch aircraft. It transitions to a self-guiding terminal mode when the target is within range of its own monopulse radar set. The AIM-120 also has a “home-on-jam” guidance mode to counter electronic jamming. With its sophisticated avionics, high closing speed, and excellent end-game maneuverability, chances of escape from AMRAAM are minimal. Upon intercept an active-radar proximity fuze detonates the 40-pound high-explosive warhead to destroy the target. At closer ranges AMRAAM guides itself all the way using its own radar, freeing the launch aircraft to engage other targets. Eurofighter Typhoon vs F-15E Strike Eagle. Comments of readers (Feel free to Leave a Reply on However, in a dogfight, delta designs come up lacking. Meanwhile, the F15E is based off a fighter.. The second advantage derives from the accuracy of low level delivery, far greater in this day of laser bomb guidance (one must note that the range of a laser target designator depends critically on the amount of water vapour in the atmosphere - under adverse weather conditions one has only a fraction of the range available in clear weather, therefore low level attack is necessary).

The elite F-15SE signature reduction methods are applied to the airframe for frontal aspect stealth capability, which ensure greater survivability in the battlefield. The F-15 family has a combat record of 101 victories and zero losses. The US Air Force’s F-15E has flown thousands of combat missions during worldwide combat operations. The European theatre of operations has the potential for becoming the ugliest aerial battlefield in history. The Russians by virtue of political doctrine have become increasingly aggressive, spending the last decade improving their offensive capability in Europe. This reflects in more armour and mechanised infantry, but also in growing numbers of Su-22 Fitter, Su-24 Fencer, Su-25 Frogfoot and MiG-23BM/27 Flogger tactical strike aircraft. Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation "F-15E adds a variety of air-to-ground modifications to the already excellent air superiority design of the F-15. It can be distinguished from its predecessor by the conformal fuel tanks under the fuselage, fitted to extend attack range without sacrificing payload. The F-15E boasts first class speed, excellent acceleration and durability. This aircraft can be fitted with powerful high-performance missiles or cluster bombs for air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. This large-bodied multirole aircraft excels on battlefronts." ― Hangar How to Unlock Conceptually the F-15E Dual Role Fighter (DRF) represents a further step in the implementation of a philosophy which is traditional to the USAF.
