The color filter array

The Fuji X100 has a contrast detection autofocus system, but the Fuji X100S has a hybrid AF system that uses either contrast or phase detection depending on the situation. The camera decides which system to use depending on the AF point selected and the brightness of the scene.Indeed, we ran into more issues in bright sunlight than darkness, where the top shutter-speed limit of 1/1000th second at F/2 often caused over-exposure. Fujifilm have compensated for this limitation by incorporating a 3-stop Neutral Density filter, which allows the aperture to remain wide-open at F/2 even in very bright conditions, perfect for outdoor portraits where you want an out-of-focus background. You do have to delve into the menu system to turn this on, or map it to the Fn button on top of the camera, although that control is already handily assigned to the ISO speed. The ND filter can also be used to creatively slow down the shutter speed for shooting bright, fast-moving subjects like waterfalls.

Fujifilm X100S Review: Digital Photography Revie

Linus, I had the same problem with my x100 blck lim edit, seems to be a known problem with some kind of "finger" losing the contact with the curtain.Send to Fuji and repaired w/o problems. In terms of operational speed, the Fujifilm Finepix X100S has some real standout highlights and very few weak points. Shutter lag is virtually non-existent on this camera, so once you have set the focus, you'll never miss the moment because the camera can't fire the shutter quickly enough. Continuous shooting speeds are better than the X100, with a top rate of 6fps for 29 JPEGs if a shutter speed faster than 1/100th is used, dropping to 3fps for shutter speeds between 1/10th and 1/100th of a second. Note that both the focus and the exposure are set according to the first frame in each series, so it's not a particularly good system for tracking fast-moving subjects in varied lighting conditions.

The Fujifilm Finepix X100S's lens has a fast aperture of F/2.0, which in conjunction with the large APS-C sensor makes it easy to throw the background out of focus and achieve some nice bokeh effects, helped by the 9-blade aspherical lens. The combination of the F/2.0 aperture and the extensive ISO range of 100-25,600 makes the X100S very well suited to low-light shooting, allowing you to hand-hold the camera in places where you'd usually be reaching for a tripod (if allowed) or other support. The clever ISO Auto Control setting allows you to set the default sensitivity, a maximum sensitivity (up to 6400) and a minimum shutter speed (1/30th is a good starting point), with the camera over-riding your ISO choice if it thinks you're being too ambitious whilst maintaining a shutter speed that won't introduce camera shake. Fuji has also boosted the pixel count of the sensor from 12.3MP in the X100 to 16.3 million in the X100S - the same as the Fuji X-Pro1's sensor. Successor to the popular X100 camera, the Fujifilm Finepix X100S is a new compact camera that's still quite unlike any other available today. Featuring a retro design that bears more than a passing resemblance to the Leica M-series, the X100S is a blend of old and new, bringing together a very traditional control system with some distinctly cutting edge features. At the heart of the X100S is a new 16.3 megapixel APS-C X-Trans CMOS II sensor and the removal of the optical low pass filter, along with the same 23mm fixed focal length F/2 lens and Hybrid Viewfinder as the original X100. This cleverly combines an optical viewfinder and an electronic viewfinder together, with the former similar to those found in rangefinder-type film cameras but overlaid with vital shooting information. Other new features offered by the X100S include an ultra-fast hybrid AF system with built-in Phase Detection pixels, the world’s first “Digital Split Image” feature for precise manual focussing, and a new EXR Processor II for faster response times. The X100S has a number of other features that are indebted to the film past, from the quiet leaf shutter, the ring around the lens for setting the aperture, dials for the shutter speed and exposure compensation, to the range of film simulation effects and the leather-like finish. Costing £1099 / $1299, such attention to detail still doesn't come cheap, so carry on reading our Fujifilm X100S review to find out if it can justify its price tag.i do shoot with shadow tones set to -1 or -2, and i still feel the camera clips blacks more than my x10, which has a sensor 1/6 as large. it's clear from the DR test in the x100s review that there is 2 stops less DR in the blacks, compared to the x-e1, x100, x10, etc. in the example images, I can see much more detail on the spools of thread in the shadows, on images from the x-e1The X100S shoots stunning 1920x1080 HD video and can record crisp, clear audio at the same time using an optional external stereo microphone

The Fujifilm X100S rests in its own niche. It won't really suit all that many picture-takers because there's no zoom available from its fixed 35mm f/2.0 equivalent lens and physical dials are set up in a retro fashion that may confuse the mass market. I love this camera, from the moment I picked it up in the store. Tried a lot of different models, but kept coming back to the X100S. No explosion of buttons on the back, no excessive feature laden menus, no bulky protruding zoom lenses, no auto-intelligent stuff doing what you don't want just as you fully press the shutter....The diopter adjustment goes from -2 to +1. I have '-1', and just scroll the wheel until I see everything sharp in the viewfinder. The imposed image is somewhere near infinity, so I do not expect reading-glasses to be a problem at all.

Missing the point of this camera. I have this camera already collecting dust, a Nikon D40. Same size, body weight and sensor. Combine that with output from the X-trans APS-C sensor that not only exceeds the Sony 16mp M43s sensor but most other APS-C sensors, faster AF (than an E-M5 with the Panny 20mm mounted) an OVF and some incredibly intuitive controls and the shooting experience plus image quality makes for an incredibly satisfying camera.

Fujifilm X100T vs Fujifilm X100S Detailed Compariso

The overall look of the camera has not changed from what it used to be on the original X100, whether you are looking at the front, top or the back of the camera. Fuji just changed the locations of some camera markings and swapped the “DRIVE” and “AF” button locations (the “AF” button used for selecting the active focus area has been moved to the rotary dial to the right of the LCD). The biggest change is in the guts of the camera, which I will go over later in this review. In 2015 I traveled to Thailand, Morocco and Indonesia. I was looking for a camera to travel with and decided to buy the Fuji x100s as my companion Despite having a fixed focal lens, the X100S still offers a respectable close focusing distance of 10cms, so macro shooting certainly isn't out of the question. There is one small fly in the ointment though. Normal focusing is now from 50cms to infinity, an improvement on the X100's minimum 80cm focusing distance, but if you want to get closer to your subject than that and still be able to auto-focus, you still have to select the Macro mode, which in turn prohibits the use of the optical viewfinder, instead relying on the electronic one. You then have to turn off the Macro mode to return to normal focusing beyond 2ms. It's not the steps that you have to go through that's problematic, but the 50cm distance, which you'll often find yourself on the cusp of when grabbing a candid shot, especially if you're trying to fill the 35mm angle of view. Seasoned street photographers will completely circumvent this by manual focusing, but it is annoying for us mere mortals who rely on auto-focusing.

  5. Almost all compact and mirrorless cameras use contrast-detection autofocus - in its simplest form, this racks the lens through its range of focus distances and picks the one that delivers the highest contrast at the selected AF point. Once upon a time this was painfully slow, but focusing algorithms and lens designs have improved substantially over the past few years, and it can now be extremely fast and accurate. But it struggles in some situations - most notably with moving subjects.

Fujifilm X100S review - Cameralab

  2. The Fujifilm Finepix X100S can now record full 10800p movies at 60 or 30fps with stereo sound, with the option for turning this mode on curiously buried at the bottom of the Drive menu (you can, as with most things on the X100S, customise this and assign the Fn button to the movie mode). It's fair to say that the X100S's movie mode isn't overly advanced. You can set the aperture and shutter speed before recording begins, but not during, and you can also set the Film Simulation mode, so black and white footage is possible. Continuous auto-focusing is possible, and you can now manually focus too, which encourages some more creative effects. There is a HDMI port for connecting the X100S to a high-definition TV, although as usual there's no cable supplied in the box. Also missing is a paper copy of the otherwise helpful manual, which is supplied on CD-ROM instead, along with the consumer MyFinepix software the slow and rather unintuitive RAW convertor (essentially a specially customised version of the commercial Silkypix application).
  3. The Fuji X100s is very disappointing. I bought this camera to shoot like a digital rangefinder camera. The f/stop ring is nice but works in full stop increments only !!! Where have these Fuji guys been for the last 40 years ? The shutter speed dial is perfect, Bulb, T, and 1/4sec through 1/4000th sec. plus A. Then there is that exposure knob to the right of the shutter speed dial that allow 1/3 f/stops from -2 to +2. Perfect for dialing in that exposure that full stop increments wont give you, except is doesn't work in the manual mode. You have to use that rotating thumb wheel that I hate because if you press it just a tad too much you go into different modes. Fuji had an excellent idea, a digital rangefinder, fixed focal length lens that could have been a perfect digital replacement to a Leica rangefinder of yesteryear - and they screwed it all up. I played with the camera trying to get used to the myriad of options that are all unnecessary. Sent it back.

The result is the X-Trans CMOS's 6x6 color filter array, with red, green and blue photosites on each row and column (diagrams courtesy of Fujifilm):Almost all digital cameras use what is called a Bayer color filter array, named after the Kodak engineer who developed the pattern. Over the years it's proved to be an excellent way of capturing both color and detail in a scene. Essentially, it consists of a simple repeating pattern of four pixels, two of which are sensitive to green light, one to red and one to blue, in a square RGBG layout.

At the heart of the X100S is a 16.3 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, a size that's more commonly used by the majority of DSLR cameras than by your average compact. The X100S joins the very short list of compact cameras that use an APS-C sensor, which is about 10x bigger than those found in most compacts, and also larger than those in most compact system cameras. It promises to deliver image quality at least on par with DSLRs, and as our test photos and sample images show on the next two pages, the X100S actually surpasses a lot of them. We won't say any more at this point other than to recommend that you take a look at our Sample Images for yourself.

The X100S has all but replaced my 5D3 for family outings and candids. It's a wonderful camera with wonderful IQ. The only other manufacturer who understands this market segment is Leica. The Gold Award is well deserved.

You do understand this is a fixed lens camera right...?Your comparison is not only against interchangeable lens cameras, but images taken using some of the better/best lenses available for those cameras...Regardless of the cameras you chose, you are comparing the upper most left corner of the image to assess lens sharpness?? While it would be great if every lens was sharp across the whole frame, most people with photographic experience (specifically lenses/cameras designed to allow some hope of dof) anticipate some softness along the edges of the frame - where the majority of the time that area is already going to be oof anyway so it does not matter 99% of the time.In actuality, if you make your comparison in other areas of the image the X100S is sharper than the better/best lenses used for testing the cameras you 'randomly' selected attempting to belittle the X100S.Overall the industry considers the X100S one of the best high-end compact cameras available - for many reasons.it is a little weird that blacks are trimmed so much. i've felt this for a while now, but didn't think i'd eventually learn shadow dynamic range is quite a bit lessAurora Aperture has announced a new rear mount filter system that is compatible with more lenses from additional manufacturers, features an improved design and includes a greater variety of filters.Sure, they could use F1.4 but the price would be doubled. I own both x100s and OMD. While I love them both, I can strongly vouch for the image quality of the X100s to be better than OMD with any lens. OMD images are slightly clearer but where it looses is the Color matrix and the dynamic range. X100s has that silky smooth pleasing look that is just absent from OMD.

The 8 Most Useful Accessories for your Fujifilm X100s

  1. The X100S also comes with a compact built-in flash in the front of the camera. You can activate or deactivate it by pressing the flash side of the rear rotary dial. Compared to DSLR built-in flashes, this one is tiny and not very powerful. Do not expect it to light up a room for you, as the flash is only meant to be used occasionally. It works great as fill flash for a single subject or a small group at close distances, but nothing more. The good news is, you do not have to rely on it if you like working with flash – the standard hot shoe on the top of the camera will work with any speedlight or flash trigger system like PocketWizard. And thanks to the leaf shutter used on the X100S, you do not have to worry about slow sync speeds when using external flashes! This is one of the main reasons why flash gurus like David Hobby went crazy over the X100/X100S cameras. Personally, I have used the Fuji X series cameras with my Nikon speedlights both on and off-camera in manual mode and they worked out great! RAW editing takes too much time for people with deadlines. Wedding photographers and hobbyists are probably the biggest RAW users. Just don't tell me RAW=PRO and JPG=amateur. JPG is ideal for people who need to spend more time with a camera in their face than a mouse in their hand. That isn't to say that everyone should immediately rush out and buy this hotly anticipated camera. Despite its popularity amongst seasoned photographers, the X100S is still very much a niche product, with its non-interchangeable fixed focal length lens, comparatively large body, and the emphasis on a manual way of shooting that requires some experience on the part of the user. The X100S will most appeal to the street photographer, with its 23mm lens being equivalent to the classic focal length of 35mm, the oversized optical viewfinder crucially showing the subject before it moves into the frame, and the various dials making it quick and easy to control the camera while it's held up to your eye.

The Olympus mju-II / Stylus Epic is a highly-coveted film camera thanks to its sharp 35mm F2.8 lens, great metering/AF and pocketable/weather-sealed body. But these days the cost of one is just too darn high!Alttaki fotoğrafların hepsi makine üzerinden direkt çıkan JPEG fotoğraflardır. Herhangi bir işlem görmemiş olup otomatik ISO’da çekilmişlerdir.Unlike most cameras that use a Bayer pattern of red, green, green and blue receptors (usually referred to as RGGB) arranged in a 2 x 2 grid, the X-Trans CMOS II device uses a 6 x 6 RGGB filter array pattern, with a random arrangement of colour filters within each block of 36 photo receptors.

Ricoh has published a video setting out its development plans for new lenses, which include 85mm F1.4, 21mm F2.8 Limited, and 16-50mm F2.8 models.Fujifilm is helping make the world a better, healthier, and more interesting place. Camera Construction and Handling

One solution to this is to use phase-detection autofocus. In short, this is able to tell from a single measurement exactly how to adjust the lens to achieve an in-focus image. All SLRs by necessity use this approach, with a dedicated autofocus sensor. But it's becoming increasingly common on mirrorless cameras too, using a system that's integrated onto the main imaging sensor. It's employed most successfully by Nikon's 1 System cameras, but other manufacturers such as Sony and Canon use similar technology, with varying degrees of success.Ever heard of the olympus micro four thirds series? and the panasonic micro four thirds as well? oh and the sony rx 100?Someone is a fanboy. The Fuji X100 makes incredible images under every possible condition from daylight to moonlight, and it's the world's smallest real camera. The Fuji X100S gets everything right. It doesn't pervert what a real camera should be like most offerings from volume camera makers like Nikon, Canon and LEICA.. Anybody who uses "ASA" is OK, in my book! A veteran photographer for sure. I just purchased an X100S for the same reasons you describe. It will be used mostly for low light black & white work. The viewfinder alone sets it above just about anything other than an SLR. I have a hard time being comfortable with arms length shooting, while looking at an LCD. I use my forehead as a low light stabilizer. Always have.

Camera Controls and Menu System

Fuji's X100 proved very popular with enthusiast photographers looking for a high-end compact camera that produces images on a par with a DSLR. For many, its retro styling and control combined with modern technology made it a real winner, and a natural choice for documentary and street photography.Again another camera that is not CanNik brand and all I can read about, great sensor, color etc but FUNCTIONALITY, the basic mechanic yet again is a failure. How long it would take them (Fuji,Sony,Olyimpus,Panasonic) to come up with product that will not fail within first year? I am not saying that 2 major players did not have horrible cameras on the market but in a much less percentage that all others...I am still waiting for decent compact camera.

Review of the Fujifilm x100s for Street Photograph

  1. When he learned that he had a hearing condition that would make continuing his work in music production difficult, Greg Krycinski picked up photography. His stark black-white-landscapes and street scenes resonate in their simplicity. See a sample of his work here and find out more about him in our Q&A. Read more
  2. As I have already written in my prior reviews of Fuji cameras, I love the retro-style controls of the high-end X series cameras, including the X100/X100S. These controls are certainly not for beginners (the Fuji X-M1 has more intuitive controls that are more suitable for beginners). If you have only shot with a DSLR before, these controls certainly will take a little time to get used to. The main dial on the top of the camera controls the shutter speed and the 1 stop markings are engraved on this dial. If you want to go in smaller 1/3 increments, you can still do it by rotating the rear rotary dial in either direction to increase or decrease the shutter speed. The red letter “A” indicates Aperture Priority mode, so if you switch to it, the camera will pick the shutter speed in 1/3 increments for you automatically, based on the camera meter reading. The aperture of the lens is always controlled through the lens directly. Thus, the camera essentially has no “Manual” mode.
  3. Hi Lola, I'm answering though I guess you've worked it out by now! Someone else may find it useful ;-)Sounds like the command dial is locking the Q menu button; along with those controls surrounding the command button i.e. flash, white balance, macro and delete. At some point the central menu/ok button must have been held down for long enough ( 3 seconds) to activate the lock. To undo this function, simply depress the menu/ok button again and hold for 3 secs. Incidentally there's quite an interesting discussion here -http://www.fujix-forum.com/index.php/topic/8543-x100s-disablelock-command-dial/and generally I've found this forum ( and the DP Review one, here) to be a helpful resource as I've learned how to get the best from my X100s - I recommend it.Happy photo making with your beautiful new camera!! Regards,Dom
  4. g from Canon 5D, in my opinion based on previously owning an xe1, you would not be happy. Raw file processing is a drag and the image quality, especially in mixed lighting will yield image quality that will disappoint. I have 2 5dmiis for work and wanted the xe1 as my grab and go.... i was disappointed to sah the least. Gram the eos m and the pancake lens and the ef adapter. The images are outstanding and the video is excellent.
  5. I'm an X100 user and a huge fan of that platform. IN fact, I've always been a Fuji fan because they march to a different drummer with so many innovative cameras, especially medium format and panoramics. Not into DSLRs due to bullk, weight and mirror slap. I just bought a new black X100S at what I consider a very attractive price ($450 below the original release price). Sold the X100 for half that. Let's say I'm not an early adopter. Next will be the X-T1 (or perhaps the X-Pro2, we'll see) with the 14 and 56 lenses and I'll be set. The 23 F/L will be satisfied with the X100S plus I'll have a second body just in case. The only reason I would consider a DSLR is to use the 24mm tilt-shift lenses but am hoping the DOF on the 14 will get me what I need for landscapes. If I need a 24mm Canikon tilt-shift that bad for a big trip, I can rent. Onward and upward Fuiji!

FUJIFILM X100V Replacement for FUJIFILM X100S B&H Photo Vide

  1. The most noticeable of these is the change in sensor design to match that of the superb Fuji X-Pro1. Like the Fuji FinePix X100, the Fuji FinePix X100S has an APS-C format sensor, but it's an X-Trans CMOS II device with an unusual colour filter array.
  2. Why don't you just reduce the shadow tones in camera? I shoot with both shadow and high tones set to -1 to give a flatter image and then adjust them in post with a little extra contrast to my taste rather than the camera's.
  3. Inthemist, you need to define why that aps-c sensor is a benefit. Listing a tech spec doesnt automagically make it better.
  4. Mount Fuji - or Fuji-san in Japanese - is the highest peak in the Fuji volcanic chain in central Japan and is the country's highest and most beautiful mountain. Almost perfectly round, its symmetrical form has long been celebrated in poetry and painting, most notably in the 8th-century verses of Yamabe..

That said, I really enjoy the X100S. I've overcome the slow AF and soft image quality (in part) by switching to manual focus. The manual focus ring is very responsive. I feel like it's just a matter of time/use before I get better at manual focusing.I m thinking of buy this cam.just 1 thing I m confused about its low light AF performance.any1 can tell me abt it?thanks in advance :)

I received my X100S 4 weeks ago (love the camera) and today I noticed that the viewfinder curtain is stuck. So it is not possible to switch between the Ovf and Evf. It has nothing to do with the macro mode as it is stuck halfway up. Is there anyone that had simular problem? The Fuji X100T is the answer to an unpopular question: how does one take better photographs? Not sharper photographs, not larger photographs, but better The X100s was the first camera I ever loved. I appreciated my Canon cameras; I grew up with them and learned photography on them, but it wasn't..

  3. This makes use of the camera's phase detection pixels (which double as green pixels) to create a double image that is than merged into the image from the other pixels. It's essentially a form of digital rangefinder focusing.
  4. Info:Fuji Television Network, Inc. (富士電視台株式会社フジテレビジョン Kabushiki Gaisha Fuji Terebijon) is a Japanese television station that is based in Daiba, Minato, Tokyo, Japan, also known as Fuji TV or CX, based on the station's call sign JOCX-DTV
  5. I am old school. Twins lens Rollie film shooter. RB-67 user. A shooter 40 plus years. Mainly a Nikon guy, full time. I have the X100s and love it. It took me about a year to figure it out, due to the fact I only shot the camera three times in a year. I use the nikon full time and not much time to look at the settings and figure it out. Now that I had time over this summer to work with the X100s I thing it is a great camera. I thought the Fuji had a tough menu compared to the Nikon. I have five Nikon cameras and just use to the Nikon Menu. Since I had time with the Fuji I love the camera, IQ is good. Focus is OK. I am getting better with it.
  6. One day they may add a (very) small zoom (say 3x) to this, so to get things just a little closer. Same goes voor some other APS-C compact though, like the Coolpix A.

My biggest handling complaint on the X100S is the tripod mount placement and the fact that the memory card is located in the same place as the battery (the same problem as in all X-series cameras). This issue is rather annoying because the tripod mount socket is located off the center of the camera close to the battery/card compartment, making it painful to remove the card or battery while the camera is mounted. I use the Arca-Swiss quick release system and using a generic plate keeps the camera way off-center. It would be great if Fuji could move the card slot to the side of the camera, or move the tripod socket away from the battery compartment to make it more accessible. Also, the original problem of allowing the battery to be inserted in any way is still there on the X100S. Although the battery has a slight curve on one side, the battery compartment has a square shape. Fuji can address this easily by changing the shape of the battery compartment a little. Not a huge problem, but something that should be addressed in the future in my opinion. Recommended The Fuji X100S is a significant update on the X100 Our Verdict The Fuji X100S is a very enjoyable and rewarding camera to use, its hybrid viewfinder is superb, the retro-style controls enable quick control over exposure and the advanced filters are available when you fancy a bit of fun.

The X100S utilises a leaf-shutter rather than the focal-plane shutter that DSLR cameras have. This is a small circular shutter that's built into the lens itself, the chief benefits being near-silent operation and extremely high flash-sync speeds (up to 1/4000 second). To make the camera even less obtrusive, there's a Silent menu option which turns off the speaker, flash, AF-assist lamp and most importantly the artificially-created shutter-release sound, instantly making the X100S perfectly suited to candid photography.Three other controls complete the X100S's top-plate. The small but responsive shutter release button is encircled by the On/Off switch, and it has a thread for a very traditional mechanical cable release - there's no need to buy an expensive dedicated accessory for this camera. Alongside is the tiny Fn button, which by default provides quick access to the ISO speeds, but can be customised to suit your own needs from one of 10 different settings. Finally there's an external flash hotshoe for suitable dedicated external units, supplemented by the camera's built-in flash positioned just above the lens, which has a range of 50cm - 9m at ISO 1600.

Nikon has paired its Z 50 kit with a number of accessories to create an all-in-one set of gear to get up and shooting video and vlogs right out of the box. Just like the original X100, the X100S also comes with a hybrid optical (OVF) / electronic (EVF) viewfinder. However, the electronic viewfinder is not the same – it is an upgraded version, with a lot more resolution – 2.36 megapixels versus 1.44 on the X100. Is the resolution difference very noticeable? I experimented with EVF on both the X100S and the X-Pro1 (which has an identical viewfinder as the X100) and to be honest, I cannot see a huge difference. The EVF on the X100S seems to be more saturated with perhaps a little more detail, but it is not something very obvious. The EVF on the X100S also showed some strange interlacing and moire patterns when looking at fine patterns, while the lower resolution X100 / X-Pro1 seemed to handle those a little better. The Sigma fp packs a lot of capability into the smallest full frame body on the market. What's it like to shoot a video with, though? We found a lot to like, and some things we hope can be improved.Fujifilm was in fact the first manufacturer to bring on-chip PDAF to market, with its F300EXR in 2010. But it's appeared curiously reluctant to exploit the technology in higher-end models until now. Both the X100S and the smaller-sensored X20 use the system, which delivers much-improved focus speeds over their predecessors. The PDAF sensors are localized towards the center of the frame, and use pixels that are masked to receive light from the left- and right-sides of the lens's exit pupil. The difference between the images coming from these two paths allows the focus distance to be determined. We'll be examining how well the system works in the performance page of this review.

I actually find it a very big improvement over adjusting an aperture ring, especially in ovf - which is quite fiddly. If you are working in manual and want increments of aperture - the command dial where your thumb is will jump in 1/3 increments on either side of your current exposure to + or - 1 stop. In spite of your inference - it does not take you into different modes when shooting in manual. If you push it in all the way you cam jump between evf and ovf but the exposure mode is unchanged. This is the best feature of the camera. Thanks to the magnesium alloy top and bottom covers and overall solid build, the Fuji X100S is a camera that is built to last. Although I wish the whole shell was made out of magnesium alloy like on the Fuji X-Pro1, it would have certainly added to the weight of the camera. Instead, Fuji used a plastic shell for the middle section and covered it with high-quality synthetic leather.Helping to keep the image quality high is the X100S's fixed 23mm lens. Fujifilm revealed quite early on that they opted for a fixed lens rather than an interchangeable system to deliver the best images possible from the sensor, and although this will undoubtedly put many prospective users off the camera, we feel it's a worthwhile compromise. 35mm is a classic focal length, half-way between true wide-angle and the standard 50mm, which is roughly equivalent to human eyesight. Instead of relying on a zoom lens, the X100S forces you to get up close and personal with whatever or whoever you're photographing, adding a level of intimacy to your photographs that is often missing when shooting with a zoom.

How in the world could you describe this as a serious professional camera. It basically doesn't have RAW? If Nikon or Canon did this everyone would be complaining majorly.Fujifilm has a long history in designing its own unique sensors which don't use conventional Bayer-pattern color filter arrays. The X-Trans CMOS is the latest design to emerge from its out-of-the-box thinking, and while it uses a conventional square-grid pixel layout (unlike the company's EXR compacts), the color filter array over the pixels has been completely redesigned. Our DPReview team just reviewed the new Fujifilm GF 45-100mm F4 OIS lens. Check out the 100MP photos shot with this impressive standard zoom for Fujifilm's medium format system. The Fujifilm X100 is a series of digital compact cameras with a fixed prime lens. The series includes the FinePix X100, X100S, X100T, X100F, and X100V It appears that Fujifilm kept what made the X100 and X100S popular (and also quite unique), so the DNA remains intact. On the other hand, there is a plethora of enhancements affecting both hardware and firmware. They all seem to share one common goal: to make the camera more accessible and..

Fujifilm X100T was introduced to market in September 2014 and Fujifilm X100S was launched in July 2013. There is 14 months difference between X100T and X100S so we don't expect to see a huge technology difference between these two cameras but it would still give an advantage to younger.. We would like to be able to use them to shoot raw and JPEG files, so that there is the option to have a 'clean' and a processed image. However, it's nice that the camera automatically switches to JPEG-only mode when one of the filters is selected, so there's no need for you to manually switch file format beforehand. That is pretty much the definition of the Gold award. For you it's not important to have an aperture ring, for many it is.Many people have chosen the Fujifilm systems just because there are physical dials and buttons they can use as opposed to some competition. However, one problem with the Bayer array is its susceptibility to false color artefacts when faced with an image that contains finely-repeating patterns (such as textiles), caused by interference between these patterns and the regular grid of photosites. The result is unsightly bands of color, which in most digital cameras is suppressed by the addition of an optical low pass (or 'anti-aliasing') filter in front of the sensor that blurs away the finest image detail. This reduces any moiré patterns, but with an inevitable loss of resolution. There are also changes to the manual focus system, and the Fuji X100S debuts the world's first Digital Split Image display.

Click through for more information.I am considering the Fuji X100S. I have to rely on professional feedback from unbiased photographers. I used to have a Canon 10D , 20D and 5D as my professional cameras and used a small Powershot S45 as my "point and shoot". I was blown away by the accuracy of the S45 exposure metering system but was always disappointed with the 10D, 20D and 5D. I had to shoot in RAW to get good JPEGS. Highlights were always over-exposed. The point and shoot S45 always gave me good exposures in JPEG's, I never needed to use it in RAW ( it did shoot RAW). My wedding photographer friend used an Olympus with a sensor that had two types, one for bright light one for normal. Result was no blown out highlights. Ne never used RAW and the JPEGS were always spot on. My question is: How is the metering system in the X100S and how does the sensor handle contrast ? I don't want to shoot in RAW all the time. The result, according to Fujifilm, is minimal susceptibility to color moiré, which in turn allows the company to dispense with the anti-aliasing filter that's used by most other cameras. In principle, this means the X100S should be able to resolve more detail than Bayer-array cameras with a similar pixel count. The 'II' version of the sensor adds another trick; on-chip phase detection autofocus.
