The ferry ride to Suomenlinna takes about 20 minutes and you the tram and metro tickets are also valid on the ferry. Remember to check when the last ferry of the night leaves, as you will get stuck if you miss it!Uspenski Church This large red church is hard to miss, as it sits on a hill overlooking the city. This Eastern Orthodox church is massive and very impressive with its large domes and gold crosses. It’s actually the largest Eastern Orthodox church in all of Western Europe. The public transport system in Helsinki is extremely well designed. The trams and buses can take you practically anywhere. We used the Helsinki Card to make our way around, as it includes free public transport - trams, buses, metro, commuter trains and the Suomenlinna ferry. After you finish at Soumenlinna take a walk along Helsinki’s famous Esplanade. It’s a beautiful tree-lined street filled with delicious restaurants and cafes, prestigious hotels and, in the summer, spacious parkland for picnics. A lush oasis in the heart of the city.
If you are not planning to purchase the Helsinki Card you will pay around €3 for a single ticket or €8 for an all day travel card. It was walking distance to the famous shopping district, the picturesque waterfront and very conveniently, just a few steps from the central train and bus station.
Sompasauna is one of the most beloved spots by the sea for the city dwellers. The markets are set up in Senate Square, in front of the Tuomiokirkko (The Lutheran Cathedral, also known as “Helsinki Cathedral”) - an impressive white structure that towers over the surrounding landscape. Admittedly, Helsinki is off the standard “Scandinavian tourist trail.” The city never seems to be on the travel radar of most budget travelers I know. It’s a bit out of the way, and the city just doesn’t get the raving press that other places do.

The lunch benefit voucher many companies give to their employees has a value from 6.80e to 9.00e and most restaurants have a matching lunch offerings. Sometimes they’re buffet, sometimes a short menu. Even the better restaurants will have a very affordable lunch offering, for example at the high end the two-Michelin starred Chez Dominique has been ranked as the best two star lunch for it’s value (from Wed to Fri).
