Rokinon 14mm f2 8 review

-When shooting landscapes keep in mind where your ground or foreground objects are. Don’t let the lens be too close to the ground while trying to focus on something in the distance, the ground will always look like crap. Think about it, if you’re shooting something 20 feet away, say on a beach, and you have the beach sand right below the camera which is 2 feet away, it will not be sharp or in focus. And this lens does not have a beautiful “out of focus” feel to it. If you see my photos below you’ll notice I try to keep the scene at a relatively consistent focal distance. So when I shoot at an f13 the whole scene can be in focus including corner objects.Rokinon doesn't advertise any sort of weather sealing. This isn't a surprise, given that the 14mm F2.8 is meant as a lower-cost option when compared with pricier first-party models. But if you're used to taking your a7 or a9 series camera out in the rain, make sure you pair it with a lens that offers dust and splash protection.Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 AF, Canon 6D | Coma Test, 100% crop of upper-left corner – Again, essentially none.

One issue that I did have with the lens though was that at certain times it seemed to throw off the meter in the 5D Mk II. It was rare though, and only happened in one instance in Aperture priority. But to be fair, that has happened with any unchipped lens I’ve used. With that said, it would be wrong of me to say that that hasn’t happened with Zeiss glass; but their lenses are in a whole different ballpark and price point.Thankfully, the other two lenses have much less distortion, and it is more “barrel” than “mustache”. NOTE: You can easily correct distortion with a lens profile if you’re shooting raw, but not if you’re shooting video. Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 ED AS IF for Canon. 480. Canon EF 135mm f/2.8 with Softfocus Telephoto Lens for Canon This lens is sharp, has decently low coma, low vignetting, and low distortion. See the full review here.

I am looking for a wide angle, affordable astrophotography lens, usable during the day for landscape photography, but I never tried any MF lens. I was said that the Samyang 14mm 2.8 AF was a good choice but not this good for astrophotography compared to the MF version. It’s got image stabilization, too, something that no other ultra-wide ~14mm lens has unless you count sensor-based stabilization. If you’re willing to carry a heavier lens that stops at 15mm instead of 14mm, this is a great choice. This is my review of the Rokinon 14mm f2.8 ultra wide angle lens! Watch til the end for some photo and video samples. I used this lens for over half a year with my Nikon It's only $300!! Compared to the Canon or Nikon 14mm, which are well over $1200, this Rokinon lens actually performs very well Sigma fp Kit + 45MM F/2.8 DG DN |C. Объективы. For example, my Rokinon 14mm is noticeably softer than other identical copies I've tried. If you’re using the Canon 5D Mk III, the viewfinder is bright enough that you probably won’t need any assistance. In fact, that almost made me want to upgrade to a Mk III due to just how crystal clear it was to focus through the viewfinder. What I’ve learned was the people giving the bad reviews were criticizing the lens because it was all manual. So are Zeiss, Leica, Voigtlander and many others. I've had both 12mm lenses with me for review, so I've been able to compare them a bit. There are better lenses out there, but not too many that sell for this price. The 14mm F2.8 AF is priced at $899, and typically sells for less. if you can get it on sale, and understand that you won't get stellar results shooting at wide apertures, you may want to consider adding it your bag. But if you can stretch your budget, there are better options out there. The Sigma 14mm F1.8 DG HSM Art is one—it's an optical gem in comparison, although one that's bulkier and priced at $1,600. Sony's FE 12-24mm F4 G zoom is another pricey alternative, but nets you the convenience of a zoom lens in addition to delivering noticeably crisper photos.Autofocus on an ultrawide lens isn’t very necessary, though, for many types of photography. So if you’re not shooting something like action sports or weddings, you’ll probably be just fine with a manual focus lens, using magnified live view to focus.

The diffraction on my Rokinon 14mm is great. It starts to be noticeable at f16 and is very bad at f22 on my Sony A7r. A camera with smaller pixels like the Sony A7r will handle diffraction much worst than something with large pixels like a Canon 5dMkiii. You can read more about diffraction here. After my experiences I’m pretty sure Ken just got a bad copy. My lens does not exhibit the bad qualities he speaks of which you can see in my test shots below. I actually love this lens. And remember it’s Ken Rockwell. Take anything he says with a grain of salt. He has a bad reputation for bad reviews. All of these images were captured in raw format and processed to taste with a fine-radius sharpening which helps to reveal a lens’ fullest potential. Note that vignetting was fully corrected in the extreme corners, of course. So, if you want the absolute highest resolving power, get the Rokinon 14mm f/2.4 SP. 1. -Don’t shoot wide open on this, you’ll loose a lot of corner sharpness and overall quality. Unless you’re shooting astrophotography.
  2. Unfortunately, all of them do have quite a bit of vignetting at f/2.8. We’ll get to the breakdown next.
  3. Whether you’re a landscape photographer, a nightscape photographer, or an in-your-face portrait or action sports photographer, you might be in the market for an ultra-wide prime lens. Rokinon now has three 14mm lenses on the market.
  4. or barrel distortion. The Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 AF is somewhere in the middle. It's lighter and smaller than the 14mm f/2.4 SP, but it also feels very well-made (despite the plastic parts)
  5. Diffraction is important and not many reviews include it. For example, I love my Zeiss 35mm lens that I got with my Sony A7r but the diffraction of that lens is terrible at higher apertures making the lens no good for landscape photography. Even though this is based on physics and the size of the pixels on the sensor, I’ve found some lenses to perform differently when it comes to spherical aberrations and diffraction.
  6. ute adjustments, or more quickly to move from extremes of focus range in a speedy manner.

Something that needs to be said about the lens though is that the way it meters with Canon DSLRs makes it better for HDR usage in a way. By that I mean that because it is unchipped, I was actually able to get the image to the right much easier with evaluative metering mode than I would be with a Canon lens: which would have probably blown out the highlights. Granted they could have been recovered in post-production because of just how good Canon’s modern sensors are, but it is convenient that I didn’t have to do that.Flare is a concern with wide lenses, as landscape shooters may struggle to keep the sun out of the frame, or may want to incorporate it in order to make a more dramatic exposure. My shots with the sun in the frame show the 14mm AF has a tendency to capture flare. The effect is most pronounced as you stop down, with the greatest flare visible around f/11. The photo above, shot at f/8, is one of a sequence taken at each full stop, and while the effect at the bottom left corner is less pronounced at f/2.8 and f/4, it's still quite visible. It's not something you're going to get with every shot that incorporates the sun, but it's something to watch out for.For this review, I will consider various photography subjects, and use the criteria I apply to all lens reviews.Remember the distance focus marks on the lens cannot be trusted, I usually just make mental notes of where infinity focus is and go from there.

You might notice a faint color difference when using any of these three lenses. Still, that’s a fair trade-off for the sharpness they offer for the price. It also benefits from extremely low vignetting by f/2.8, thanks to being stopped down, and has very low distortion.

I wouldn’t take it out as a daily walk-around lens, especially on a compact full-frame body like the Sony A7III. Still, it’s a great alternative to any of the ultra-wide zooms out there. The Samyang is not weather sealed like the Canon or Sony nor does it have a front mounting threads. So when shooting in harsh environments, like the beach or the desert, I’d pick the Canon or Sony since it also accepts front screw on UV or ND filters that can protect the lens or creates cool effects. Pretty nice if you’re shooting seascapes and wants to get the smooth water effect. The SP 14mm f/2.4 has nine aperture blades, and therefore its sunstars are a little more pointy. However, there are 19 sunstar points and they’re still not the classic, thin, sharp-pointed stars that I like to see.Still, if you’re smart enough to buy it when the lens is on sale for just $250 or $300, and it lasts you 2-3 years before breaking, it remains a good investment if you value affordability and portability above all else.

This makes it one of the fastest ultra wide lenses that works well for the Sony E-Mount. However, when you look at the Cine version of this lens they rate it as a T3.1. Meaning, it’s a dark lens. When I compare it to the Sony 16-35mm side by side at f5.6, the Rokinon shoots almost a full stop darker. I really love the Sony ultra wide lens, it’s just so well made and I highly recommend it.Celestial ! Yes I hadn’t thought of that. I think it would work pretty well for that as you wouldn’t notice vignetting or distortion.

The lens overall though, isn’t really that large at all. Nor is it heavy. It is characterized by an extremely large and wonderful feeling manual focus ring and a smaller aperture ring towards the end of the lens body. In between all that is a focusing distance scale. At f/4 the resolution jumps noticeably to an acceptable 2,771 lines on average. The central area of the frame is quite strong at 3,783 lines, but image quality doesn't hold up as you move away. Since depth of field is so deep at 14mm, it doesn’t need to be very snappy, just reliable. And thankfully, it is. Even in bad light, it still nails focus just as consistently as a name-brand lens. The sunstars (at f/~4) are impressively close to the classic sunstars of yesteryear’s un-rounded aperture blades. See the example below at 100% crop:This image demonstrates the smearing of detail that you get in the extreme corners of the image.  Unfortunately there is little you can do about this but you’ll see once you’ve shot a few images with it that there can be times when it isn’t noticeable and times when it really is, depending on the surface that is in the image in the corner.  For example take a look at the interior shot below in the distortion example.  A smooth wooden floor is unlikely to demonstrate this issue very noticeably from a distance.

Review: Samyang/Rokinon 14mm f/2

  1. If you’re on a budget, the Rokinon still is a very fun lens. When I was on a tight budget this lens was perfect for me and really helped built my portfolio. Still some of my best shots were done with the Rokinon lens and still to this day the majority of my prints I sell were shot with this lens.
  2. The Canon lens also has pretty bad chromatic aberrations in the edges when shooting in high contrast areas. Actually the edges are a mess compared to the Samyang. The Sony seems to correct them and bake the data into the RAW files so it’s much harder to compare.
  3. Look through YouTube, forums, and other websites asking people about some of their favorite wide angle prime lenses: and you’ll probably find out about a little known gem to many: the Rokinon 14mm f2.8. Following along with Rokinon’s tradition of creating an affordable, manual focus, manual aperture, and optically sharp lens: it is a lens that takes some getting used to. To boot, I don’t often shoot this wide: so it forces me to not only get creative with my angles, but also get super duper close to my subjects.
  4. The UMC 14mm f/2.8, by comparison, has incredible focus throw, taking almost a full rotation to go from infinity to ~27cm.

Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles – Very sharp and crisp detail when shot at f16 and sharpened in post.If your priorities as a photographer involve portability, affordability, and overall image quality, then one (well, likely two) of these lenses will suit you very well. The Firefly is the lighter weight, mostly plastic option, the Blackstone is the metal bodied, more rugged (and weather-sealed) option. It boasts almost zero distortion and low vignetting, however, it does have some coma. Samyang 14 mm f/2.8 ED AS IF UMC. Rokinon 14mm F/2.8 An Impressive Wide-Angle Astrophotography..

The Rokinon 14mm f2.8 is the same lens as the Samyang, Bower and Pro Optic 14mm f2.8 and is currently the cheapest way to get into the ultra-wide lens game for Canon and Nikon cameras.  The kind folks at B&H Photo lent me this lens for a couple of weeks to make some evaluations and I’ll be discussing the Canon EF mount version here, though I expect all conclusions to hold true for the various other mounts that are also available.Rokinon 14mm f/2.4 SP, Canon 6D | Coma Test, 100% crop of upper-left corner – To date, the best coma performance of any 14mm prime lens ever? Rokinon 14mm f2.8 IF ED MC Lens Review and Spec

  1. I’ve found the sweet spot to shooting landscapes on this lens is somewhere between f11 and f16. I usually don’t go all the way to f16 anymore with the Sony A7r.
  2. The new Rokinon 14mm Ultra-Wide Angle F/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens is the highest quality affordably priced 14mm lens on the market. WARRANTY: Rokinon Authorized Dealer - Includes USA Manufacturer's Warranty. POWER: Focal Length: 14mm / Aperture Range: f/2.8-22
  3. The two factors that make me personally prefer the Rokinon 14mm f/2.4 SP are the fact that the Rokinon is slightly more portable, and has essentially zero coma. The Sigma can’t claim that even at f/2.8.
  4. Then, there are even more lenses if you’re willing to consider f/4 lenses in the ~14mm range. Still, for the purposes of this comparison, we have to draw the line somewhere.

Rokinon 14mm f2

I’ve been thinking about this lens. Quick question – is the petal hood removable? I would like to start doing some underwater work, and would need a filter ring to attach the dome port to.Two of these Rokinon 14mm lenses are extremely portable compared to any other lens (DSLR or mirrorless) that can hit such a wide focal length and fast aperture. Samyang AF 14mm f/2

The 14mm draws images with a heavy vignette. It's more noticeable if you shoot in Raw format, or have disabled Shading Compensation in your camera menu. Uncorrected we see a -2.7EV drop at the corners at f/2.8, which drops to -1.8EV at f/4 and -1.5EV at narrower f-stops. If you shoot in JPG format with corrections enabled it's less of a concern—there's a very modest -1.1EV drop at f/2.8 and at narrower settings we see negligible dimming, less than -0.5EV.The Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 AF is somewhere in the middle. It’s lighter and smaller than the 14mm f/2.4 SP, but it also feels very well-made (despite the plastic parts). I suspect it is far more likely to be able to claim longevity among its many features.I’ve included some RAW sample files in this review that you can download for free. These are all shot with the Sony A7r. No EXIF data is available but the aperture on these photos ranges from about f8 – f16. By downloading these you’ll be prompted to give your email which will include you in my newsletter. I won’t spam you and they are rare. Enjoy! In the corner, the Rokinon 14mm f/2.4 SP is sharpest of all. Solid at f/2.8; fantastic at f/4. (On Canon 6D)Rokinon has created an excellent lens with their 14mm f2.8. It is sharp, delivers some excellent colors, and is ergonomically pleasing. The only major issues are the lack of a chipped focusing mechanism to work with Canon’s cameras and the fact that I can’t put a filter on the front of the lens unless I hack a matte box onto it.

I can see through the lens and make adjustments but when I press the button it does nothing.. what am I doing wrong? I am reviewing a Rokinon branded lens, technically called the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 ED AS IF UMC Super Wide Angle. I say Rokinon branded because the exact same lens is sold under a variety of brands, including Samyang, Bower, Vivitar, Pro Optic, Walimexyeah, there's a few

Perhaps the live view issue is because the lens is manually stepped down all the time so you’re seeing the view you’d see if you pressed the stop down button on a canon lens. This could easily be proven by fully opening up the aperture in live view. The aperture ring needs to be adjusted manually on Canon EOS camera bodies. That’s excellent for videographers. For photographers, it will mean that you’re essentially saying good bye to the back dial of your DSLR as all you’ll need to operate the camera is the lens dial and the shutter dial.

Rokinon 14mm f2.8 is a Manual Focus (MF) Wideangle Prime lens with 35mm FF max sensor coverage. When mounted on a 35mm FF sensor camera, it will give you an FF equivalent focal range of 14mm. With a max aperture of f2.8, this is a fast lens Make no mistake though: shoot with this lens wide open and you’ll see just how amazingly sharp it is wide open at f2.8; such as in the photo to the left. In focused on one of the ladder’s steps and the rest just falls into a sort-of kind-of oblivion.

Optically I find the Samyang to be edge to edge slightly sharper than the Canon 16-35mm f2.8L II, except at infinity the Canon is slightly sharper at the center. Compared to the Sony 16-35mm the Sony outperforms corner to corner, the Samyang might be slightly sharper in the center but it’s very close.Ultra-wides like this 14mm are definitely a specialist lens and rectilinear ultra-wides (ie not fisheye lenses) are few and far between.  For Canon users there is the $2100 14mm f2.8 MKII or there is the Rokinon 14mm f2.8 for $399.  A further alternative would be to use a fisheye like the 8-15mm (or one of Sigmas very good alternatives) and then use software to ‘de-fish’ it.  Lightroom is capable of such maneuvers but stretching and warping pixels in that way will always degrade it severely and that seems like a huge waste of an expensive lens unless used only occasionally.Sigma 14mm f/1.8 Art: The Sigma 14mm f/1.8 Art is an amazing lens, quite possibly the sharpest 14mm lens around by the time it gets to f/2.5-2.8 where other lenses start. Development announcement: To be released in 2014. 40-150mm F2.8 PRO Let’s get right to it! All three of these 14mm lenses are impressively sharp, even wide open at f/2.8, from the center to past the rule-of-thirds area. Rokinon also offers a 100mm lens, but like the 14mm lens it has a T stop of 3.1, which makes it less than desirable in many situations. Do you think that the Samyang/Rokinon 10mm f/2.8 (Canon mount) would be a better choice as wide angle over the Panasonic 14 f/2.5 for the Blackmagic Pocket.. The 14mm ($599.00 at Amazon) is surprisingly small given just how wide of an angle it covers, and the fact that its image circle covers a full-frame sensor. It measures 3.8 by 3.4 inches (HD) and weighs 1.1 pounds. The barrel is metal, although the integrated lens hood and slip-on cap are plastic. Despite having a relatively flat front element, there is no thread for lens filters. You can get a holder for glass filters from NiSi for use with the lens.Hey guys! Love your work and enjoy comparing notes. I’ve had the pleasure to shoot astro in multiple locations around the country. I use a variety of lenses on my Nikon bodies, but I’ve never used a Nikon 14mm 2.8 for any of them. I have an opportunity to pick up one at a fairly nice price, but I haven’t been able to find any other shooter’s site or samples. It seems most use the Nikon 14-24 zoom, but logic says the prime should be better. What’s your take? Thanks, and happy shooting!!!

It’s quite interesting; and it is also a factor to keep in mind when waking up at 4AM or getting to the right spot at 6PM to capture images during the golden hour. The lens continues to improve as you stop down, with good quality through most of the frame at f/5.6 (3,174 lines), but edges that still show just 2,000 lines. The 14mm F2.8 AF struggles even at f/8, where most lenses are crisp from edge to edge. The average score is quite good, 3,460 lines, but edges still show a just-okay 2,473 lines. Here's a very quick look at the new Rokinon 10mm F/2.8 Prime Lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras. This lens mounts directly to MFT cameras such as the GH3/GH4/ or BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera I conducted some tests to check out the sharpness and contrast at both ends of the focal range in the center. I shot images of a $5 bill using mirror lockup on a tripod at various apertures. Each test was performed three times and the results compared and sharpest one chosen for viewing.I also get several emails a week now from people who are on the fence about this lens, afraid of getting a bad copy. I always tell them not to worry about it since people vocalize a lot more when they receive a bad copy than when they receive a good copy. If you have any concerns of the quality of this lens just read all the good reviews over at Amazon.

In the other corner, to be honest, the oldest Rokinon f/2.8 UMC is poorly built. In fact, it’s referred to as “disposable” by some rental shops. So, if you are tough on your gear, you’ll probably break it eventually.– Bad Mustache Distortion – Adobe now has Canon profiles built into Lightroom and Photoshop. Should work for Sony as well. Rokinon 8mm T3.8. This fisheye lens is perfect for shooting film and video, creating that smooth Samyang 12mm F/2.8. Great for filming from long and short distances, this manual focus lens is a Number of Diaphragm Blades: 6. Optics: 10 elements in 8 groups. Minimum Focus Distance: 0.14m I was pleasantly surprised by the feeling of this lens when I first un-boxed it. It feels solid and well built with a satisfying click from the manual aperture ring.  Most lens manufacturers these days put little stock in the feeling of their focus rings because most people are shooting with auto focus.  The Rokinon 14mm is manual focus only though and I’m pleased to say that they didn’t skimp on their focus ring design.  It is damped nicely with just right resistance and rotates very smoothly.  You’ll also immediately notice that is has a very long throw to it.  AF lenses tend to go from MFD to infinity with just an inch of barrel movement these days but this lens requires a couple of hundred degrees of rotation, giving you far greater accuracy, especially when the subject is closer to the lens.Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 ED UMC, Canon 6D | Vignetting & Distortion Sample: The noticeable mustache distortion is not just at the very edges.

The image quality from the lens is absolutely top notch, and I feel even rivals (and in some ways bests) the Zeiss 15mm f2.8. Of course, the image above was subject to heavy editing for artistic purposes. But the 500px community seemed to like it.The reason I say this is because I get a lot of emails from people who buy this lens, then take a few shots around their living room or in their backyard then aren’t happy because the lens isn’t perfect. And this lens does have a few flaws. Olympus M.Zuiko 7-14mm F2.8 PRO Lens Review. Posted by Robin Wong on May 18, 2015 with 145 comments. Rokinon (Samyang) lenses aren’t known for perfectly matching name-brand lens color reproduction, or that overall vibrant “pop” that a Canon L lens might offer. Thanks for letting me know, Jerry. It’s possible that there is now a profile built into Lightroom by Adobe. I wrote this post a VERY long time ago when there was not, but I think they now support it. Have you tried to look? I don’t have this lens so I can’t check it myself.
